Economies of Latin America-Free-Samples for Students-Myassignment

Question: Write a report on the development path of the two countries of Latin America. Answer: Introduction Latin America is defined as the group of nations in the two continents of America, with a predominance of Portuguese and Spanish. The group consists of many countries with varying level of economic condition. Until 1980s, the economy of Latin America was mainly based on the economic policy of import substitution. This policy had helped in the growth of the domestic economy and domestic businesses. However, this policy also reduced the international competitiveness of the domestic industry and increased the debt crisis of the nations. By 1990s, the continent switched to free market economy system. This resulted in reducing the debt crisis and established the industries of agriculture, mining and forestry (Oecd.org 2015). Among the nations, Columbia and Argentina are two biggest economies in Latin America. Both the countries have demonstrated growth prospects and economic scopes. The economy of Argentina is the third largest in the Latin America and second largest in the South America. The economy is based on a rich source of natural resources, high level of literacy, export based agricultural industry and diversified industries. On the other hand, Colombia is just behind Argentina in the rank of largest economies of Latin America. This is also export based economy, petroleum being the major export product, followed by manufacturing (reports.weforum.org 2015). The investment decision on any economy depends on many factors. Majorly the macroeconomic factors of a nation influence the investment decisions. The element of political and economic uncertainties, stock of capital and other resources, income level of the country, level of liquid asset, aggregate demand, population growth, government policies, and many such economic factors determine the level of domestic and international investments in the nation. Hence, while making an investment in a nation of Latin America, the choice of the nation depends on such macro economic factors. In this case, the choice between Columbia and Argentina depends on the economic and political conditions of the countries and their growth prospects. The social factors also play a major role in investment decisions, such as, the crime rate, education level of the citizens, standard of living etc. The nations must be compared in order to take the final decision about the investments (Hatch and Howland 2015). Comparison of the countries Economy of Argentina Argentina is one of the most developed nations in the Latin America. It is a high income economy with the second position among the South American economies and third position among the Latin American economies. In 2016, the nominal GDP of Argentina was USD 545.9 billion (World Bank 2017). The major sectors contributing in the growth of the GDP are Agriculture, fishing and forestry (6%), mining (3.6%), manufacturing (17.2%), construction (5.6%), transport, utilities and communication (7.9%), government (9.5%), and business, social and other services (33.3%). The country has faced an inflation rate of 21.9% by June 2017, which is quite higher compared to the developed countries. Almost 32.2% people lives below the poverty line. The economy of Argentina is export based. In 2015, the total export of the country was $56.76 billion and the main export partners are Brazil, China and the United States. The country imported goods worth of $57.18 billion in 2015, and the major import partners were Brazil, United States, China and Germany. The key exports are petroleum, gas, corn, vehicles, wheat and soybeans, and the imported products are machinery, motor vehicles, organic chemicals, plastics, petroleum and natural gas (Arboleda and Gonzalez 2016). Economy of Colombia Colombia is another largest economy of South as well as Latin America. In 2016, the nominal GDP of Colombia was 282.5 billion USD (World Bank 2017). The level of inflation is 4.77% in 2017, which is at a moderate level and less than that in Argentina. The major sectors are textiles, oil, food processing, chemicals, clothing, footwear, cement, coal, gold, emeralds, home appliance, electronics, and shipbuilding. The country exported goods worth of $55 billion in 2014, and imported goods of $53.8 billion. The main export goods are petroleum, coal, nickel, apparel, televisions, smartphones, computers, steel, chemicals, emeralds, bananas, apparels etc. and import products are industrial equipment, consumer goods, chemicals, paper products, fuels, electricity and transportation equipment. The key trade partners are United States, Canada, EU, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Netherlands, China, Mexico, Brazil, and Germany (Tabares, Alvarez and Urbano 2015). GDP comparison of the two countries Figure 1: GDP comparison of the two countries, 2005-2016 (Source: World Bank 2017) The graph above depicts the growth of economies of the two countries in the past decades. It can be seen that, both the economies grew significantly, especially 2010 onwards; however, the level of growth of Argentina was higher than that of Colombia. Competitive advantage Competitiveness of a nation is dependent on the capacity of the industries to upgrade and innovate, and the companies gain the advantages against the competitors due to challenge and pressure. Over time, the competition has shifted more towards creation, innovation and assimilation of the knowledge. Thus, competitive advantage is generated and sustained through a localized process. Countries gain competitive advantage in some industries, in which they can create specialization. Hence, a nation cannot be competitive in all industries. In the industries, where the nation can produce most efficiently and at lower cost than the competitors, competitiveness is gained (Wagner III and Hollenbeck 2014). Global Competitive Index (GCI) measures the effect of the primary factors, contributing to the conditions for competitiveness of a nation, with a specific focus on the macroeconomic environment, institutional qualities, supporting infrastructure and technology (Huggins et al. 2014). According to WEF Global Competitive Index of 2016-17, Argentina holds 104th position, and Colombia holds 61st position. In the list of 2015-16, Colombia was in the same position, while Argentina was at 106th position. Thus, from 2015 to 2016, Argentina has improved its competitive advantage compared to Colombia (WEF 2017). If the exports and imports of the countries are analyzed, then the areas of competitive advantage can be understood. WEF has defined competitiveness as a set of policies, institutions, and elements determining the productivity of a nation. This in turn determines the rate of return on the investments in the economy. Investments drive the growth rate of a country, and a competitive economy draws more investments and grows faster. The 12 pillars of competitiveness are, Institutions, Infrastructure, Macroeconomic environment, Health and Primary education, Higher education and training, Goods market efficiency, Labor market efficiency, financial market development, Technological readiness, Market size, Business Sophistication, and Innovation (reports.weforum.org 2015). WEF also defined five stages of development and weighted index for measuring the growth and competitive advantage position of the countries, based on the 12 pillars. The stages are classified on the basis of the nature of growth. In stage 1, the growth is mainly factor driven and the nations compete on the basis of factor endowments. In Stage 2, growth is efficiency driven and in Stage 3, the growth is innovation driven. There are two transition stages in between these 3 stages. The classification of the countries happens on the basis of two conditions. Firstly, level of per capita GDP at the market exchange rate and secondly, the dependence on the resource sector than on the income (Gaportal.org 2017). According to those stages, Colombia is in stage 2, which is efficiency driven, and Argentina is in the transition phase from stage 2 to stage 3, where stage 3 denotes the phase that is innovation driven. Hence, it can be said that, Colombias growth is dependent on the efficiency of the factors and resources, while Argentina is slightly more developed than Colombia. Its growth is generated from transition of resources being efficient and moving towards being innovative. However, the GCI ranking and score is better for Colombia than for Argentina due to various government policies to improve competitiveness (WEF 2017). The sub-indexes of GCI are Basic Requirements, Efficiency Enhancers and Innovation and Sophistication factors. The GCI table also comprises of Rank and Score of the nations. In the 2016-17 Global Competitiveness Report by WEF, Argentina scored 3.81 out of 7. The average score of the nation was 3.87 from 2007 to 2017 (Tradingeconomics.com 2017). In 2016, Argentina went up the rank by two positions. This is driven by innovation and sophistication elements, which reflect better preparedness of the nation to adapt to the changing environment. The institutions quality improved due to better protection of the intellectual property and more efficient jurisdiction. The education quality and efficiency of the goods market reflect signs of development. The improvement in both the score and rank came after the new administration implemented broad economic and social reforms in an adverse macroeconomic context, that is, Brazils recession. Brazil is the main trading partner of Argentina, and low commodity prices, high inflation, and adjustments in utility tariffs have created difficulties for the transition to flow towards a market oriented model. However, growth is expected to come along due to competitive reforms, although consumer sentiment is weak (weforum.org 2016). In 2016-17, Colombia ranked 61 and scored 4.30 out of 7 in the Global Competitiveness Report by WEF (Tradingeconomics.com 2017). For the last 20 years, Colombia has worked on improving its competitiveness in the international market by implementing some reforms for consolidating the National System of Competitiveness, Technology, Innovation and Science. This has solidified the institutional framework for achieving private-public collaboration, required to develop the National Agenda and to strengthen the regions (Oecd.org 2015). With this institution, the system of innovation has made the competitiveness of the nation more efficient. All these systems worked separately and created impediments for the coordination between the competitiveness and science, technology and innovation (Williamson et al. 2013). Hence, the competitive strategies remained independent nationally as well as regionally. The new government has promoted the integration of all these factors into a single factor for competitiveness. Thus, not only competitiveness is achieved over the years, but other factors are improved also. At the same time, the government established many new departmental committees to promote the agendas for regional competitiveness, productivity, science, technology and innovation agendas, along with the national agendas (Harzing and Giroud 2015). Recommendations It can be recommended that, investment have better scopes of return in Colombia than in Argentina. Colombia is more developed technologically, with the establishment of National System of Competitiveness, Science, Technology and Innovation. The exports of Colombia also reflect these changes, while Argentina still depends on agricultural and mining. Hence, in relation to the 12 pillars of competitiveness, framed by WEF, Colombia has achieved the maximum success in the past few years. The government is actively involved in the process of improving the competitiveness of the nation; thereby committees are created for specific purposes (Galindo and Melndez 2013). Hence, the political, social and economic conditions of Colombia are favorable for investments. Conclusion Latin America has also suffered from the ill effects of global financial crisis. The export values dropped, creating economic crisis for the export based nations, such as, Argentina and Columbia. However, with time, Colombia has recovered from the shocks and increased its competitiveness than Argentina, another major economy of the Latin America. By observing at the economic, social and political conditions of the countries and evaluating their competitiveness based on the 12 pillars and stages of development, it can be said that, investments in Colombia would bring more positive impact than in Argentina. Although, Argentina have come up in the ranking list in the last year, and Colombia remained at same position, yet, the rank and score of Colombia is much higher than Argentina. Hence, investment in Colombia is more profitable as the nation is more competitive, especially in the field of technology and innovation, than Argentina References Arboleda, A.M. and Gonzalez, J.F., 2016. 15 Dis- Words and Their Relations

15 Dis- Words and Their Relations 15 â€Å"Dis-† Words and Their Relations 15 â€Å"Dis-† Words and Their Relations By Mark Nichol Words with the antonymic prefix dis- are easily confused with similar-looking terms starting with mis- or un- that usually have differing connotations or entirely distinct senses. Here are comparative definitions of some of these terms, along with etymological identification: 1-2. Disassemble/Dissemble/Misassemble The first two words have a shared etymology but distinct meanings. To disassemble originally meant â€Å"to disperse† and now means â€Å"to take apart,† but to dissemble is to conceal or simulate. The Latin root they share is simulare, which means â€Å"to make like or to compare.† (Resemble, semblance, and the like also stem from this word, and similar is closely related.) Dissimulation is dissemble’s more directly descended synonym. To misassemble, meanwhile, is to assemble incorrectly. 3-4. Disassociate/Dissociate These interchangeable words mean â€Å"to separate,† either literally, as in withdrawing from a social group, or figuratively, as in diverging from past behavior. (The common root stems from the Latin term sociare, which means â€Å"to join,† from which English derives social, society, and similar words.) 5. Discharge/Mischarge Discharge means â€Å"to release,† â€Å"to unload,† or â€Å"to perform one’s duties.† Mischarge is a rare word meaning â€Å"to make a mistake in charging,† as in loading a weapon. (The root word, charge, is from the Latin term carricare, meaning â€Å"to load.†) 6. Disconnect/Misconnect To disconnect is to uncouple or unhook. To misconnect is to put together erroneously. (The shared root, connect, is from the Latin word connectere, â€Å"to join together.† That word’s root, in turn, is related to nexus, meaning â€Å"a link or bond.†) 7. Discount/Miscount A discount is a markdown on a price. A miscount is a tabulation made in error. (The source of the root count is the Latin word computare, from which, of course, compute and computer are derived.) 8. Disinformation/Misinformation Disinformation is a form or propaganda intended to cover up inconvenient facts and/or sway public opinion. Misinformation is a more neutral term referring merely to incorrect data. (The Latin root they share is formare, which means â€Å"to form or shape.†) 9. Disinterest/Uninterest These seemingly indistinguishable words sharing the root word interest (from the Latin term interesse, meaning â€Å"to be between† or â€Å"to make a difference†) have a key difference of connotation: To be disinterested is to have no stake in something, to be impartial, and uninterested denotes the more basis sense of a lack of concern or investment in something. 10. Dislocate/Mislocate To dislocate is to put out of place; to mislocate is to misplace, or lose. (Locate is from the Latin word locare, â€Å"to place,† and is related to locus, which refers to a site or center.) 11. Disorder/Misorder Disorder is a lack of organization or an instance of random placement, or a state of social upheaval; it is rarely used as a verb, perhaps because disorder is generally not a consciously achieved state. Misorder is an uncommon verb meaning â€Å"to erroneously order,† as in preparing an order, or a list of items such as tasks to accomplish or products to purchase. Disorder also applies to a mental or physical condition that is not normal. (The root word order is descended from the Latin term ordinem, meaning â€Å"arrangement.†) 12. Disorganized/Unorganized These antonyms of organized (from the Latin word organum, meaning â€Å"instrument† or â€Å"organ†) are nearly synonymous, but a distinction is sometimes made between the former referring impersonally to places and things and the latter being a personal characteristic. 13. Disqualified/Unqualified To become disqualified is to be deprived or made ineligible; to be unqualified is to already lack the required prerequisites for qualification. (The common root is from the Latin term qualis, meaning â€Å"of what kind,† which is also the source of quality.) 14. Dissatisfied/Unsatisfied These terms have different shades of meaning: To be dissatisfied is to be disappointed in the quality of something, such as a product, or work done; unsatisfied refers to a quantitative displeasure, such as when an appetite or demand is not fulfilled. (Satisfy, the root of both words, comes from the Latin term satisfacere, a compound of satis, meaning â€Å"enough† also the source of sate, meaning â€Å"to appease an indulgence† and facere, meaning â€Å"to do or make,† whence fact.) 15. Distrust/Mistrust Both words mean â€Å"the absence or lack of trust,† with no real distinction between them. Should You Participate in the National Student Leadership Conference

Should You Participate in the National Student Leadership Conference SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Have you heard of the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC)? Maybe you’ve heard that participating in NSLC is a great way to impress colleges, and you’re wondering if that’s true. Spoiler: If you're considering NSLC because you think it's prestigious, you'd be dead wrong. Keep reading to learn why. This guide will go over exactly what NSLC is, what its potential benefits and drawbacks are, and how you can decide if you should participate in one of its programs. What Is NSLC? The National Student Leadership Conference is a program that hosts career-focused leadership conferences for select high school students (as well as some programs for middle school students) over the summer. The NSLC markets itself as a highly selective program that only accepts students with exceptional leadership and academic skills. During the program, students live in college dorms and attend NSLC-hosted lectures and activities on campus. Program activities can include classes and lectures, guest speakers, leadership workshops, and off-campus field trips. NSLC markets their programs as a way to help participants gain leadership skills and learn about future careers while experiencing life on a college campus. Programs are offered in 21 different fields, such as international diplomacy, engineering, and theater. These programs are between 6 and 18 days in length, depending on the subject they focus on. NSLC offers programs on the campuses of 13 universities (although not all program fields are offered on each campus): Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA) Northwestern University (Chicago, IL) UCLA (Los Angeles, CA) University of California-Berkeley (San Francisco, CA) Fordham University (New York City, NY) Georgia Tech (Atlanta, GA) University of Washington (Seattle, WA) American University (Washington DC) Georgetown University (Washington DC) Rice University (Houston, TX) Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) Yale University (New Haven, CT) Yale-NUS College (Singapore) How Do You Apply to NSLC? Anyone who is currently a high school student and has a â€Å"B† average or higher is eligible to apply for NSLC. The first step is being nominated or identified as a potential candidate for the program. You can be nominated by a teacher, counselor, or NSLC alum. You may also be identified through certain talent development programs, such as the College Board Student Search Service and the ACT EOS. Even if you aren’t nominated, you can still apply for admission on NSLC’s website as a merit applicant. Merit applicants must demonstrate strong academics and leadership potential and must also have a counselor or teacher submit a recommendation form. Those who were nominated and those who had their merit application accepted then complete the Enrollment Application. You are required to submit a $500 deposit with your application that will be applied to your tuition if you choose to take an NSLC program or will be refunded if you are not accepted or choose not to enroll. Students who are accepted into the program will then be e-mailed an Acceptance Packet that includes forms you are required to complete. After you have submitted those forms, you will be able to enroll in the NSLC program of your choice. How Competitive Is NSLC? The National Student Leadership Conference markets itself as a program exclusively for top students and future leaders. In their marketing materials, NSLC emphasizes the fact that students must be nominated as a way to show its "competitiveness." However, these nominations are sent to thousands of students each year, most of whom NSLC knows very little about. Additionally, being nominated is not required to attend NSLC. Any high school student can still apply without first being nominated. While NSLC claims to be an exclusive organization that only selects the best students, the reality is that the program accepts most applicants, as long as they have above-average grades (specifically a "B" average) and can get a nomination or letter of recommendation. NSLC programs can have benefits, which I discuss in more detail in the following sections, but it's important for students and their parents to know that neither being nominated for NSLC nor attending one of its programs shows any exceptional academic or leadership skills on the part of the student. What Are the Benefits of Participating in NSLC? So does that mean the NSLC is all bad? Not at all. Below are the main benefits you can get from attending an NSLC program. Benefit #1: Learn About Specific Careers One major benefit of NSLC is that you can choose a program in the field you want to work in, such as medicine, law, or business. The programs are designed to provide hands-on experience in that field. For example, participants in the engineering program build wind turbines and water purification systems and also learn about new technology being used in engineering. These experiences can help you gain skills you can use later on for college and future jobs. They can also give you a taste of what a future career might be like so that you have a better idea of what you want to study in college. You may find that you actually don’t like a certain career at all, and it’s better to learn this now than when you’re already in college and have spent a lot of time and money on a major you no longer want to pursue. Benefit #2: Gain Leadership Skills Every NSLC program includes workshops and lectures designed to help develop the leadership potential of participants. By learning how to be effective leaders and using those skills throughout the conference, students can return from the program more confident in their leadership abilities and more willing to take charge in future situations. Colleges and employers both like seeing leadership experience in applicants. Benefit #3: Form New Relationships Each NSLC program includes lectures by industry professionals. These guest lecturers, who are often leaders in their field, speak with students and answer their questions. The lectures that NSLC provides give students a chance to hear more about what a particular career is like and have their questions answered by someone who has a great deal of experience in that field. Students also often form personal relationships at NSLC programs. After spending several days with other high-achieving students, many participants return home with new friends who are often interested in the same careers that they are. After the program ends, these friends can provide advice when you are looking at different colleges, majors, and jobs. Like these sheep, you may make a new friend at an NSLC program. Benefit #4: Experience College Life Participating in an NSLC program can also introduce you to college and collegiate life. All NSLC conferences take place on college campuses, and students are housed in college dorms. Living on campus can be very helpful for students who may not know much about college and want to get a taste of it while still in high school. There is also the option of receiving up to three college credits for your work at NSLC. However, students interested in earning college credit should be aware that this comes with an extra fee ($790 per credit hour), and not all colleges will accept credits earned at an NSLC program. This is discussed in more detail in the next section. Want to boost your college admissions profile in just a few hours? You'll learn both what the most important parts of your college admissions profile are and which of these are most responsive to intervention, depending on what stage of the college admissions process you're in. What Are the Drawbacks of Participating in NSLC? While NSLC can have benefits, there are also drawbacks to participating in one of its programs. I discuss some of the most important drawbacks to these programs below. Drawback #1: Programs Are Often Short Most NSLC programs last only a few days, with the longest lasting 18 days. While this may be enough time to introduce you to a subject and give you some hands-on experience, it would be very difficult to gain much in-depth knowledge in such a short time. Students looking for thorough and detailed knowledge of a particular job or career field will likely not be able to gain the amount of information they are looking for from an NSLC program. The short program length can also make it difficult to cultivate strong relationships with both program mentors and other participants. Drawback #2: Program Cost Even though they are short, NSLC programs often have a high price tag. Programs range in cost from $2495-$5295, which includes meals, housing, transportation, and materials. However, if a student wants to earn college credit, this requires an additional fee ($790 per credit hour). Spending several thousand dollars on a short program can be difficult for many high school students and their families. NSLC does offer some scholarships and offers tips for fundraising to help offset costs; however, students should expect to pay the entire cost. It's possible to have the same or similar experiences to those of an NSLC program for a fraction of the cost. This option is discussed in more detail in the following section. Drawback #3: Not as Exclusive as Marketed The NSLC markets itself as a highly competitive program that only invites and accepts top-notch students. However, like many similar organizations that claim to promote student leadership, NSLC send invitations to thousands of students each year in an attempt to maximize the number of students who enroll in their programs. While NSLC emphasizes the fact that students are â€Å"invited† to attend as an indicator of its prestige, any student can apply to the program without receiving an invitation. Most students with decent grades (at least a â€Å"B† average) and some extracurriculars will likely be accepted by NSLC, making it not all that competitive. It depends on why you’re interested in participating. Some people find NSLC programs fun and informative while others see them as overpriced resume padding. There are good reasons for attending an NSLC program and reasons that are not as strong. Think carefully about why you are interested in attending, and read on to help make your decision. Good Reasons to Attend NSLC You want to learn more about a specific career field. You want to meet students with similar interests. You want to experience collegiate life. An NSLC program can be a good way to get an introduction to a specific career and gain more hands-on experience than you would likely get in a classroom. Attending one of these conferences also gives you a chance to meet other students with strong academics and who are interested in the same career field. Sometimes these connections can become lasting friendships. Also, if you are curious or a bit nervous about college and want to know what it’s like to live in a dorm and find classes on campus, you can experience that at an NSLC program. If you can afford the cost of an NSLC program and one or more of the above reasons interest you, then you may want to look more seriously into applying. However, be aware that NSLC programs are not the only way to achieve any of these goals. If you are unable to attend an NSLC program, there are multiple other ways to have similar experiences. Students who want to learn more about a specific career can do an internship or job shadow, and those who want to meet students with similar interests can join a club, either in school or outside of school. Students who want to experience college can visit a school they are interested in; many colleges offer overnight stays in the dorms to students who are interested in attending that school. Some colleges also offer dual enrollment, which lets high school students take college classes while still in high school. An NSLC program can give you an introduction to college. Weak Reasons for Attending an NSLC Program While there are certainly good reasons for participating in an NSLC program, there are also reasons that you should not use to justify attending. Several of these reasons are given below, and, for each reason, an alternative solution is given that you may want to consider instead of an NSLC program. Weak Reason #1: You Think It Will Impress Colleges The truth is that having an NSLC program on your resume or college application is not any more prestigious or impressive than other extracurricular activities, such as being on the school soccer team or being a member of the baking club. Colleges don’t need to see that you participated in an NSLC program in order to determine that you're smart or a good leader; they can see those things simply by looking at your grades, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation. Alternative Idea: Gain expertise and leadership experience through your extracurriculars. If you are looking to strengthen your college applications by having strong extracurriculars, choose activities that relate to your interests and allow you to obtain leadership positions. Sticking with an extracurricular, no matter what it is, and acquiring more responsibility is more impressive than a short-term NSLC program because it gives schools a better idea of your interests and abilities. If you need help deciding which activities to do, we have a list of hundreds of extracurriculars for you to browse! Weak Reason #2: You Want In-Depth Knowledge of a Certain Career While NSLC programs can teach you about a career and give you the chance to do related hands-on activities and hear from people in that profession, the programs are simply too short to provide a thorough knowledge of a particular career. Alternative Idea: If you are looking for a way get in-depth knowledge on a career, consider doing an internship. Internships generally last from several weeks to several months and will give you much more time to learn the details and responsibilities of a particular job. Check out our in-depth guide to internships for high school students. Weak Reason #3: You Want to Network With Professionals The NSLC has a history of having prestigious guest speakers give lectures to program participants. While these guest lecturers are often leaders in their field and are very knowledgeable, you shouldn’t sign up for the NSLC thinking it will give you the opportunity to network with them and potentially get an internship or job. Most of the guest lecturers simply give their presentation and answer questions afterward, with no opportunity for students to speak with them individually. Alternative Idea: Do an internship or a job shadow. If you are interested in getting to know professionals in a certain career field personally, both of these options give you more opportunities to talk one-on-one. By working directly with professionals or observing them, you will be more memorable than if you were simply sitting in the audience, and this will make it more likely for them to remember you and possibly recommend you for future jobs. NSLC programs may not get you all the networking opportunities you were hoping for. Weak Reason #4: You Want to Earn College Credit While it is possible to earn college credit during an NSLC program, this should not be the main reason for you to enroll in it. Through NSLC, students can earn up to three college credits, which is the equivalent of one regular college class. Three college credits will cost $2370, and this is on top of the standard program fee. Having one college class out of the way will not help you graduate college any sooner or give you much of a head start. Additionally, many colleges do not accept these credits because they didn’t take place in a classroom environment and were earned over a short period of time. This means that there is a good chance that the college credit earned in an NSLC program won’t be accepted by the college you choose to go to, and, even if it is, those credits will be expensive to get and will only count for one class, usually a general elective. Alternative Idea: Take classes at your local community college or university or concentrate on AP or IB classes. If you are interested in earning college credits, you can often earn more and for much less money by passing AP or IB exams (which many colleges accept as college credit) or by taking classes at a community college. Some high schools will also pay for you to take classes at a nearby college or university, which could save you thousands of dollars. Summary: Is NSLC Worth Your Time and Money? The National Student Leadership Conference is a program that it can offer beneficial and interesting opportunities for high school students, but not in a way that is better or more prestigious than other extracurriculars. While the NSLC can help participants learn more about certain career fields, meet new people, and experience college life, there are many other ways for students to have each of these experiences, such as by joining a club or completing a job shadow. The high price tag of NSLC programs deters many people, and the fact that most of these programs last only a few days makes it difficult for participants to get in-depth knowledge or develop close relationships. Despite its claims of being a prestigious and competitive program, the NSLC mails thousands of invitations to students each year, and colleges do not find participating in the program any more impressive than a normal summer camp or extracurricular like a sport or school club. If you can afford it and think that an NSLC program would be a good experience, then consider attending one; many past participants have had good experiences. However, if you cannot or would rather not participate, don’t worry about missing out on some prestigious opportunity that will help you get into college. Remember, there are many ways to get the same benefits that NSLC offers that are likely closer to home and less expensive. What's Next? Want to know what a great extracurricular looks like? Nice thing that have happened to me Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Nice thing that have happened to me - Essay Example I still clearly remember that I was about to turn eighteen and I was very excited about my birthday the very next day. I was hoping for many phone calls as well as wishes from my family right after midnight. But I got really disappointed when the plans did not go according to what I had wished. As the clock ticked twelve, I waited for the arrival of my parents and my siblings into my room and I kept on looking towards my cell phone to expect messages and calls from all my friends and colleagues. I waited for an hour and the thought annoyed me that nobody remembered my birthday which was the most important day of the year for me. With thoughts that I was lonely and nobody cared for me, I fell asleep. Things did not change the next morning. I woke up and got ready to leave for my school. I waited longingly for my mother to remember but she did not find anything special about the day and she bid me farewell like all the other days of the week. I was utterly disappointed and headed for s chool expecting a warm welcome from my friends but the events did not occur as per my wish and I realized that nobody even wished me. I felt very down and the day seemed to be very long at school. I did not talk much to anyone and just looked forward to reach home and not to get in contact with anyone. As soon as I reached home, there was a pleasant surprise waiting for me.
